Sally is the Director of Aveta Publishing, which publishes B Baby Magazine, the only magazine for women who choose private maternity care. We have had the privilege of working closely with Sally for a number of years and consider her a good friend as well as someone we admire for her achievements.

Do you have inspirational quotes?

A couple – Gandhi’s “Be the change you want to see in the world,” which was the quote I put in the dedication of my book, Eco Baby, A Guide To Green Parenting.

Also, one from Ginger Rogers which most women would identify with when a man gets the credit for something they have done just as well: “I did everything he did but backwards and in high heels.”

What have been your Highs & Lows?

Highs – becoming a freelance writer when pregnant with my first son and becoming Consumer Editor of Pregnancy & Birth almost at once; then beginning a career that saw me writing for the major newspapers and almost every parenting magazine and website.

Having my two children, who just get better every day.

Publishing my book and launching a parenting magazine.

Lows – working at all hours of the day and night when sleep deprived!

Being asked in an interview “when I was going to have babies.”

What do you think is the biggest issue facing women today?

Trying to combine parenting and a career without the support network that they have in Scandinavian countries. Our provision for maternity / paternity leave and pay are abysmal.

What advice do you have for other women?

Give yourself a break and do what’s right for you. If you want to be a stay-at-home mum, or if you want to be a career woman, do what’s right for you and ignore other people’s advice. We spend too much time comparing ourselves to others.

Do you think it’s important to have International Women’s Day and why?

Despite having achieved the right to vote 100 years ago, there are still inequalities for women. In the West, this impacts on our pay and career and how much time we are able to spend with our families. Around the world, it impacts on equality, suffrage, freedoms and there are even physical abuses such as FGM. Women must support each other all around the world.
